That hit may have cemented my “idol” status for Mickey in my youth.. ( Glad the press of yesterday is not like the press today.) Years ago , I reconnected with a childhood neighbor and were talking about many things in our lives. When I mentioned about getting a new dog, he said that he hoped that I had named it Mickey after our baseball favorite and legend. Sure enough, he was right!

I grew up during his prime years so something didn't seem right with the date. Sure enough it must have been 1967 not 1957. Anybody know which way he hit more homeruns, Right or Left?

The year of 1967 makes more sense.
I have to say left. First, he batted more times lefty because of the majority of right hand pitchers. Second, the left field porch at Yankee Stadium was a pull hitters dream. Did not google this, so I might be wrong.
I admit to being one of those fans routing against Maris in their homer battle in 1961.
Most kids today, have no idea how baseball was such a dominant sport in America.

Boy, I messed up that answer. It was the right field porch for the short homers. Mickey was not exactly a pull hitter so there is some debate whether the other dimensions of the old Stadium hurt him. You needed rocket launcher to hit to center field wall lines. The porch certainly played to Maris’ strength.

Yeah. I was gunna say 1967. I remember Mantle well as a young kid, but in May it 57 , I still had a few weeks to be hatched . I always felt bad for Bobby Murcer being the media proclaimed next Mickey Mantle. I saw Murcers last homer at the stadium in 82?

I wonder how many others if any have hit 150 or more from each side. There are probably only about a dozen or so that have hit 300 or more that included some from each side. It is difficult to find a listing of home runs from each side of the plate but found some rather interesting facts. Mantle had 10 games in which he hit home runs from each side. The record is 14 and I believe only 2 or 3 had more than 10. Only 3 players in history have switch hit home runs from both sides in the same inning. That has to be one of the rarest feats in baseball.
