Kevin Willard says play ball

Postby jhart » Thu Jul 02, 2020 1:52 pm

July 2 NY Post quotes Pitino " Suggestion to NCAA, push the start of the season back to January and only play league games".
Article suggests a few Big East coaches have similar expectations.

A later start would be very helpful for a new coach with essentially a brand new roster. Gives him time to get things together. RP knows what he is doing here, it's not just what is good for everyone.

Agree, RP is full of his own BS and is a bit self serving by lobbying for a late start to the season. NU returns everybody but James Towns and should a pre-season "top 4" pick in the MAAC. Siena should be the early favorite with their roster fully intact from last season. Manhattan and Monmouth would have been highly touted, but both teams have lost several key players via the transfer wire.

Pitino knows eyes will be on him at the start of season and if he fails to live up to his hype his critics will say he can only win when he cheats. He needs to delay the start of the seasion to get his act in order and reduce the quality of the competition. Jon Rothstein apparently has stated without a non conference schedule and the "money" games it generates for mid majors they will have difficulty funding non revenue sports. I think to a degree he is right.

Yes, this will create a problem for the smaller schools with the loss of funding from the "money games."

Ivy League starts much later in hockey already so what's a 2 month later start for them. Is it going to collapse everyone else? I don't think so. Other leagues can drop a couple of games against the Ivies with no problem going to 32 instead of 34. The problem comes with the eligibility of the Ivies and ECAC for the tournament as the ECAC will have a lot less games too but not as few as the Ivies.

I guess I am overthinking the Ivy League cancellation of Falls Sports, however is Hockey considered a Fall or Winter Sport? I just saw where RPI is cancelling it's Fall SPorts, but has not decided on Ice Hockey.

It will be interesting if the Ivy League plays spring football instead. FCS teams could do that since they aren't married for any bowl games unlike the FBS teams.

Never a dull moment anymore,
