NU v Syracuse, N.Y., Thursday, Dec. 3, in a non-conference game, 7 pm
• The two teams met last year, Paulus’ first as a head coach, and Syracuse emerged with a comfortable 71-57 win in the Carrier Dome. Elijah Hughes nearly recorded a triple-double (19 points, nine assists, eight rebounds) and Syracuse dominated inside.
• Niagara finished with a record of 12-20 but improved as the season went on, putting together a competitive record (9-11) in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Purple Eagles appear poised to improve on that.
• Niagara is predicted to finish sixth in the conference in the league’s preseason poll and returns four of its five leading scorers from last season. The team is led by Marcus Hammond, who was picked by the league’s coaches as one of the MAAC’s top five players entering the year. He averaged 14.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists last year.
• Niagara shot 37.2 percent from behind the 3-point arc last season but was hampered by a lack of size, something that is likely to be a challenge again.
• Paulus was named the Joe B. Hall Award winner after the season, which recognizes the country’s best first-year coach. He was awarded with a contract extension after the season.
• Syracuse leads the series between the two schools 54-28 and is on a nine-game winning streak. Niagara’s last win came in 1976.
• SU has four returning starters into the starting lineup again. That would put Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard in the backcourt, Marek Dolezaj at forward and Bourama Sidibe at center. The the two top candidates for the job are sophomore Quincy Guerrier and Illinois transfer Alan Griffin. The interesting thing is that Guerrier and Griffin are two completely different players with two distinct skill sets.
• The Syracuse players, coaches and staff have been tested once a week since returning to the campus in mid-summer. They will be tested three times per week during the season. At first, the tests involved the nasal swab. They then switched to the saliva test and recently the tests have been the swab inside the mouth.
• Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Here are the local channel numbers for the ACC Network in Central New York (pretty sure of this):
-Spectrum: Channel 388 (SD & HD)
-Verizon Fios: Channel 571 (HD) and 71 (SD)
-DirecTV: Channel 612 (SD & HD)
-Dish Network: 402 (SD & HD)
-New Visions: Channel 780 (HD) and 80 (SD)
The game will be broadcast on ACC Network, and can be live streamed on fuboTV, Sling and Hulu + Live TV.
