NU Hockey Prepares for AHA Semifinal Contest with AIC

• Niagara enters the AHA Final Four after taking two-of-three from Robert Morris last weekend.
• After falling in overtime during game one of the series, Niagara picked up two-straight wins on the road to advance to the AHA semifinals.
• The Yellow Jackets have not played since Jan. 30 vs. Holy Cross. AIC had their quarterfinal series vs. Bentley canceled due to the league's COVID protocols.
• AIC leads the all-time series with Niagara, 12-5-2, including wins in four of the last five meetings.
• The two teams played to a 0-0 tie in its most recent meeting on Dec. 14, 2019. The Yellow Jackets went on to get the bonus point in the shootout.
• The Purple Eagles average 2.21 goals per game against AIC, with a total of 42 goals in 19 games played.
• Niagara's last win over AIC was a 4-3 overtime victory on Oct. 12, 2018.
• The Purple Eagles are looking to advance to the AHA Championship for the second time in program history. NU is 1-3 in four Atlantic Hockey semifinal games.

Niagara Notes
• Niagara finished the regular season with a 4-10-3 overall record, including a 3-9-3 mark in Atlantic Hockey.
• Niagara defeated Robert Morris in their quarterfinal series with the Colonials, two games to three.
• Sophmore goalie Chad Veltri made 125 saves in the three-game series, including two games with 40-plus.
• On Saturday, Veltri made a career-high 49 saves in the Purple Eagles double-overtime win.
• Jack Billings scored three goals to help Niagara advance, including two goals on Saturday and one goal in the series-clinching win Sunday.
• Billings now has seven goals on the season, joining Walker Sommer, Ludwig Stenlund, and Ryan Cox for the team lead.
• Croix Evingson has a team-best 11 assists on the season, followed by Ryan Naumovski with 10 helpers.
• Sommer is one of six Purple Eagles with 10 or more points. The redshirt junior leads the team with 14 points.
• On the season, Veltri has a .917 save percentage and a 2.49 goals-against average. The sophomore has 352 saves in 771:35 minutes of action this year.
• Niagara set a season-high 25 blocks in Saturday's win, the second-most under head coach Jason Lammers.
• Freshman Josef Mysak, an AHA All-Rookie team selection, has a team-best plus/minus of +5.

Friday, March 19, 2021, AHA Tournament
Niagara (7-111-3) at American Int'l (13-3-0), 2:05 ET – MassMutual Center, Springfield, Mass.
Canisius vs.Army – MassMutual Center, Springfield, Mass.

Will be a tough assignment but if goalie Chad Veltri plays like he did against ROMO we stand a very good chance of winning.

AIC
“Sacred Heart University broke ground this week on its $70 million on-campus hockey and skating arena.
This team has been playing home games in recent years at nearby Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport. This will be the program's first on-campus facility.
The building will be named Martire Arena, after Frank and Marisa Martire, who gifted $5 million to the building of the arena. Frank Martire is a 1969 graduate of Sacred Heart, chairman of the University’s board of trustees and has an equity interest in the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights.
The school is planning to host its first game at the new arena Jan. 14, 2023 against Boston College. The women's team will play its first game there the next night against Harvard.”

AIC’s Yellow Jackets haven’t played since a 3-0 shutout of Holy Cross on Jan. 30. Since the flip of the calendar to 2021, AIC has had more games canceled (12) than games played (9). Most of those have been because of the opponent's cancellation….But by the time the puck drops Friday night in their semifinal contest with Niagara, it will be nearly seven weeks since it's last played a meaningful hockey game. Never before has Lang had that much time to evaluate his team, make changes to their game, and put it all into effect….“Niagara has been one of these teams playing with 13 or 14 guys on a given night because of COVID.” said Lang. “I know how good that team is and I think we’re seeing a little bit of that right now. They’re getting healthy and they’re being able to play with a full roster and that’s a darn good team.”

Just checked in. NU goalie must be feeling like a dart board. NU again being out shot by almost 2-1 but the goalie must again be playing great. As they say, one is better being lucky than good. Hope NU gets lucky with a winning goal.
