NU 0-2 vs North Dakota

Post by NewEnglander »

Although the first official game is not until Friday October 8 at North Dakota, the college Hockey Season gets underway this Saturday. Looking at the official schedule it appears that Niagara does not have an exhibition scheduled to prepare them for the dubious task of playing North Dakota. However Atlantic Hockey has an exhibition listed at Dwyer Saturday at 7PM against archrival Canisius. What a great way to start instead of one of those bloodbaths against Canadian schools. Not sure if this has to do with travel restrictions or not but I like the idea and would like to see more exhibitions against peer NCAA teams to start the season.

The NCAA is allowing teams to have an exhibition game against each other this year due to the border issues.

North Dakota will have an exhibition against Bemidji State this Saturday. The two teams will play each other in a home and home two weeks later (after UND takes on Niagara and BSU takes on Duluth).

Let’s hope college hockey returns to some sense of normalcy this season.

Alaska's games at Minnesota this weekend are postponed due to COVID protocols. Games are rescheduled for January.

As usual not a peep out of the Niagara Sports Department about the exhibition game against Canisius. No Box score anywhere while all other games have them. Something is drastically wrong here. Looking at USCHO it stated that it was a 2-2 OT tie but that is probably wrong as well. Looking at the Canisius website I found this: https://gogriffs.com/news/2021/10/2/ice ... agara.aspx
Could it have been a 1-0 loss on a penalty shot in the last minute?

Canisius' Carney Scores Penalty Shot to Lift Canisius Past Niagara, 1-0, in pre-season opener

Deaglan Carney scored on a penalty shot in the final minute of regulation to lift Canisius to a 1-0 victory over "Battle of the Bridge" rival Niagara in an exhibition contest Saturday at Dwyer Arena in Lewiston, N.Y.

With the teams deadlocked in the final minute of regulation, Canisius was awarded a penalty shot following a Niagara infraction. Carney was selected by head coach Trevor Large to take the penalty shot and he delivered, sliding the puck underneath the pads of the Purple Eagles goaltender to give the Griffs the lead and send his teammates over the boards to celebrate the game-winning goal.

"We're excited that Deaglan was able to score the game-winning goal for us tonight," Large said. "He has been a key part of our program for the last few years, so when we were awarded a penalty shot, I knew he was the one that I wanted to take it. As always, Deaglan came up big when we needed him to. We're glad to call Deaglan our teammate."

Canisius opens the 2021-22 regular season next weekend with a non-conference series at Big Ten foe Penn State. The series opener is slated for a 7 p.m. puck drop on Oct. 8 before concluding with a 1 p.m. matinee the following afternoon.

Not a single note on Niagara's webside...Niagara has the worst and laziest Athletic Dept in the nation....simply inexcusable---the kids, the fans, everyone is getting gypped by their ineptness!. NU has a Sports Major as well....where is everyone???
Is anyone watching the store? This, unfortunately, is a microcosm of NU sports over the last five decades---lower and lower, not accountability, no Index...some great people but no institutional leadership, guidance or tangible goals IMO...

Hello. Any Hockey Fans out there? I wonder if the team even knew they played an exhibition game. Who was in net and how many saves were made and how many shots did Niagara take as well?

Let’s not get too excited by the reported exhibition. First who knows if an exhibition game is a real game, or like many Bball games is full of whistles and set plays. Possibly no goals are even counted. Also, I checked and the winning goal was scored by a seriously ill child that is part of the Canisius hockey program team like NU adopts a each year.

It is the lack of response from the athletic department that is mindboggling. Atlantic Hockey had the exhibition listed as a 2-2 tie but Niagara made no mention about it at all. That is the second report I've seen of the 2-2 tie with only the Canisius write up giving the 1-0 story. Besides opening at North Dakota without any real competition beforehand makes no sense whatsoever. North Dakota warmed up with Bemidji in an exhibition.

How the Athletic Dept can put out such a piss-poor product is an indictment of an unconcerned administration.

Other schools clean our clocks and we just sit and wonder---the whole bunch, from top to bottom, should be shown the door, IMO..

The students in the Athletic Admin program should be refunded their tuition.
