While the NCAA is reporting some facts about the portal farce, it would be interesting to hear how many of the graduate transfers get an additional degree and how many of the underclassmen graduate with any degree.

Lonnell Martin Jr. to Arkansas Pine-Bluff

Nelly Junior Joseph(Iona) to New Mexico
Walter Clayton Jr.(Iona) spurns his old coach and St Johns and commits to Florida
Tyler Bertram to Albany

Interesting name: Jaden Slaughter is a UB transfer. Buffalo kid. 6'5 SG. Didn't play last year. Might be a decent lottery ticket with all the veterans NU has brought in.

Sam Federman, who covers the MAAC, is the one that mentioned Gray might not be the last person associated with NU to be headed to Indiana St. Doesn't offer much else. Here is the tweet:

He might be referring to his uncle current NU assistant coach Antone Gray who might be the reason he is leaving to begin with.

With Clayton opting for Florida, Pitino hasn't signed a player since his presser.
He has three players including Soriano.
Braziller in NY Post reports Noah is on St. John's radar.

I think GP has the right approach in going the JC route . Most freshmen are typically not going to get a lot of minutes , so entering the portal will be a constant problem year after year . It's so frustrating given the time that a coach invests in recruiting a player out of high school only to see them bail after one year .

I am still confused about the NU roster. David Mitchell played 3 years at Brown and then played last year at Niagara as a Graduate Student. Does he get an additional year going for a doctorate?

The NCAA rule normally is: you get five years to play four. However, when Covid destroyed the ‘20-‘21 academic year and sports season every enrolled student that year was given an extra year of eligibility and time to accomplish to it. So they have six years to play five. So a freshman who enrolled in ‘20 has until the ‘25-‘26 season if he or she was redshirted for whatever reason or sat out a year under old transfer rules. I guess you could get a second masters degree or PhD. if you wanted to.
We should begin to see the number of graduate transfers decrease after ‘26.

I didn't realize Mitchell was eligible to return as well. It's a big plus for NU having Mitchell on the floor in the frontcourt for another year in light of all the attrition. Per Sam Federman: "Niagara's has six transfer commits, double the rest of the MAAC combined."

I concur with GP's strategy of aggressively pursuing transfers and Juco's due to the portal defections. What's the sense of recruiting and developing HS seniors if most of them depart after 1-2 years. What a mess this has all become.
