HAPPY 75TH BIRTHDAY TO CALVIN MURPHY

Post by jhart »

ESPN's PTI show honored Murph's career including all his amazing stats at NU, then 13 seasons on Rockets.

Murph is still the top ranked basketball player of all-time from Connecticut high schools. There are many present and former NBA players on this list . Impressive !

Something about the title of this thread seems unreal.....then I remember how old I am. But it also means I got to see Calvin's 3 varsity years and watch him have a great career in the NBA, outrunning many of his opponents and scoring from all over.

Well 1971, on the bright side you and your contemporaries had the pleasure of experiencing Murph during one of the best eras in NU Basketball history. I had just started HS in 1971 but I do remember Niagara being a "name brand" in New England during this period on par with Uconn, Umass, PC, BC, SHU, Fordham and even SJU etc...

There are many players that were incredible in college, but I think that Calvin has to be in the all-time top 5-7 for excitement....talking about what he was able to do isn't the same as seeing him fly to the corner, turn at the last minute and drill the jumper, or get a good 2-3 feet off the ground for a jump shot. His ball handling was great....the crossover move with that quick two- dribble about 3 inches off the floor or the stutter step that caused opponents to trip over their own feet. Students who were there during those years saw some great talents in opponents like Randy Smith, Ernie Austin, Herman Gilliam, Bob Lanier, Matt Gantt, Kevin Porter. But none could do what he did. Sure wish I had some video of those games.

We at least have some of the videos in our diminished brains.
