Enrollment: Niagara absorbs many Medaille U students

Post by le »

It appears NU did an impressive job harvesting many of the Medaille students, especially the education majors.
An alum informed that the freshman class is slightly over 600. He said, "many are commending the great job done by the folks running Admissions at NU."

A very sad day for the WNY community when Medaille shut it's doors on Thursday after 150 years of training teachers. Medaille was once a teaching college for Sisters of Saint Joseph. The small Catholic grammar school in NW CT that I attended was founded and operated by the Sisters of Saint Joseph. They were a tough bunch, but were fiercely dedicated to academic excellence. I'm a better man today for the education and values I received in my eight years at Saint Mary's.

Dozens of former Medaille students have transferred to other schools.
Niagara University has accepted a total of 320 Medaille students, more than 200 are education students
Daemen has enrolled 75 former Medaille students
Canisius University has transferred over 73 Medaille students
Hilbert College has transferred roughly 40 former Medaille students

Another take on the closure per the Buff News:

“I’ve seen people describe what happened to Medaille as ‘all of a sudden,’ ” said Nathan Daun-Barnett, chair and associate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University at Buffalo. “But this sector of higher education has had big challenges for the past seven to 10 years.”

Birth rates and college enrollments have been declining at least that long, with a steady drop since 2012.

The pandemic caused even bigger enrollment drops: 4.4% nationally last fall, including a 13% dip in first-year enrollment, the center reported.

Daun-Barnett said some schools are recovering, mostly large public universities and top-tier schools, but small, private colleges were “really hurt” by Covid.

In addition to Medaille, several other small schools announced closures in recent months, including Cazenovia College near Syracuse, St. Augustine College in Illinois, Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences and St. John’s University’s Staten Island campus.

Even for schools with healthy endowments, the deck is stacked against competing with public colleges and universities, at least in New York, where the state’s Excelsior scholarship allows students whose families earn $125,000 or less to attend SUNY schools tuition-free."
