Iona adds 6'1 PG Tahlik Chavez from Garden City CC

Gael fans are proclaiming the "Pitino effect" . To his credit, Pitino beat out Tulsa, Weber State and others for Chavez.

Sadly, the "Pitino Effect" has a dark side to it. Wonder if these same fans will be celebrating it if the other shoe drops.

Anyway, Pitino didn't stop with Chavez as he added Ryan Myers as well. He is a 6' PG from NY. Played at Christ the King HS.

I'm not sure if the below statement from the Iona Board is true and or verifiable. If so, Mr. Myers received quite a few offers from a long list of schools.

Ryan Myers - 6'1" CG out of CTK and New Heights AAU. 3 Star recruit who is a pure scorer who can create for himself. Offers from NC State, South Carolina, Temple, St Louis, Alabama A&M, William & Mary, Cal Riverside, Sacred Heart, Fordham, Manhattan, Siena, Canisius, Cal Poly and Bryant. Was also getting looks from SJU, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Cincinnati.

Sadly the MAAC appears to be a league of mediocrity. A lot of very good players that form in the MAAC but were overlooked by the upper level teams look for their opportunities there after they show promise and a lot of those who do not quite fit the bill also leave hoping to find greener pastures at lower levels or other similar type leagues. The MAAC needs to retain it's quality players to regain respect around the country.

I agree, it's going to become increasingly difficult for the MAAC to retain good young players with the advent of the new transfer rule. At this point, I've become an advocate of the "Cluess approach" by augmenting one's roster with transfers, 5th year players, and JUCO's. Why not ? Most "MAAC marquee freshmen and soph's are going to bolt and move up to a better league after receiving all-league honors. By stocking the roster with say 50% of JUCO's and transfers allows MAAC program's to maintain their competitive edge. Currently, it makes little if any sense to recruit freshmen only as there is far too much turnover in this new era. It's over. It's time to adopt the "Cluess approach."

Even with the new transfer rule, players are transferring at an alarming rate . My point is that we are in a new era of college basketball especially if the new transfer rule is approved . Cluess won four consecutive MAAC Titles by utilizing transfers and JUCOs. The days of building a team with college freshmen is over. Even JAM augmented his roster with Garrison , Nova transfer?, Benson E etc....

Manhattan adds George Mason transfer Jason Douglas-Stanley. He is a 6'2 SG from Mount Vernon. Sit one. Play 2.

Pitino hasn't slowed down adding JUCO SG Berrick Jeanlouis. Originally played at New Mexico St but played last season at Florida SouthWestern State. Jeanlouis is a 6'5 SG.
